Redken Alternatives to a Keratin Treatment, Evaluated

The short answer

Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate, Chemistry System shots, Frizz Dismiss and All Soft address strength, shine and frizz — the reasons most people book keratin — but none of them chemically straightens hair. Treat them as substitutes for the outcome you want, not for the smoothing service itself.

Know the types

Acidic Bonding Concentrate. Redken's bonding range, built around an acidic pH and a bonding care complex with citric acid. It exists as a salon-applied intensive treatment and as a retail regimen of shampoo, conditioner, a five-minute liquid mask and a leave-in. The mechanism is bond care plus cuticle closure at low pH, so it delivers strength and shine. It does not reduce curl, and it will not hold a blow-dry in humidity. Best for hair that is coloured, lightened or heat-damaged and snapping. This range has largely taken over from Redken's older in-salon bond additive.

Acidic Perfecting Concentrate. A leave-in treatment from the same family, positioned as a multi-benefit finishing product. It is a good daily companion to the salon service above rather than a treatment in its own right — think detangling, heat protection and shine, not repair.

Chemistry System shots. In-salon five-minute treatments applied at the backwash, in two variants targeting strength and moisture. They are the fastest option here and are designed to be attached to a colour appointment. The result is real but short — expect a handful of washes, not weeks.

Frizz Dismiss. The line aimed squarely at the complaint that sends people to keratin in the first place. It smooths the cuticle with conditioning and film-forming agents and includes a leave-in cream that noticeably improves manageability on wavy and coarse hair. This is topical, not structural: it washes out, and its performance in humidity depends entirely on being reapplied.

All Soft and All Soft Mega. Argan-oil-based moisture for dry to very dry, brittle hair. If your hair feels rough rather than damaged, this outperforms the bonding range, and a lot of people buy the wrong one of the two.

Extreme and Extreme Bleach Recovery. Protein-forward repair for severely compromised hair, including a spray-on reconstructing treatment and a cica-based cream for freshly lightened hair. Effective, but easy to overuse. Alternate with moisture or hair turns stiff.

Acidic Bonding Curl. The curl-pattern version of the bonding range. Worth naming here because it makes the point explicitly: Redken's answer for textured hair is to strengthen and define the curl, not to remove it.

Benefits

No smoothing chemistry, no exposure question. Nothing in this list uses a reducing agent or requires a high-heat sealing pass, so the ventilation and exposure concerns attached to some smoothing services do not apply.

No 72-hour rule and no regrowth line. You can wash, tie back and swim immediately. There is nothing to grow out and no demarcation to match at the next appointment.

Immediate, checkable results. The bonding and moisture lines produce a difference in combing resistance you can feel at the backwash. That makes them easy to evaluate on your own hair rather than trusting a claim.

Salon and home versions match. Because the retail regimen shares the chemistry of the salon service, home care actually extends the result — which is not true of most smoothing systems, where retail products only slow the fade.

The evaluation has to be honest about what these do not do. If you booked a keratin service to cut a 45-minute blow-dry to fifteen, no Redken product will replicate that. Bond care improves strength; it does not change how much water your hair absorbs from humid air, which is what causes frizz to return. Frizz Dismiss helps and needs reapplying after every wash. Nothing here loosens a curl pattern.

There is also a cadence trap. The Extreme protein products and the bonding range both feel excellent on the first use and can leave hair rigid if stacked weekly. If your hair starts to feel rough and squeaky rather than soft, you are over-treating with protein and should switch to All Soft for a fortnight.

What it costs

None of these products is a smoothing service, so the comparison worth making is what you avoid. Across the 31 salons in our sample publishing smoothing prices, the median is $300, with most between $225 and $350, and the result needs redoing every few months. A salon bonding treatment or a five-minute chemistry shot is priced as an add-on to an existing appointment and sits far below that, while the retail regimen is a shelf purchase.

We do not have reliable national price data for individual Redken services or products to quote a figure for them. What we can say is the structure: in-salon treatments are almost always cheaper when attached to a colour booking than when booked alone, and the retail bottles are sold at fixed brand pricing that varies little between salons.

Aftercare

After a salon bonding treatment. Skip clarifying shampoo for at least a week. Clarifiers are the fastest way to undo bond and gloss chemistry. Use the matching acidic shampoo and conditioner, and expect the benefit to taper over two to three weeks.

After a chemistry shot. No restrictions, but the result is short-lived by design. Attach it to every colour appointment rather than booking it as a standalone visit.

Using Frizz Dismiss properly. Apply the leave-in to damp, towel-dried hair, not dry hair, and distribute it before any heat. Applied to dry hair it coats the surface and looks greasy without penetrating.

Balancing protein and moisture. Run Extreme or Bleach Recovery no more than once a week, and drop to fortnightly once hair stops snapping. Alternate with All Soft. The signal to switch is hair that feels stiff and tangles more, not less.

Heat. Every product here performs better when the styling that follows it is gentler. Blow-dry on medium with a nozzle, and reserve flat-iron passes for the sections that actually need them.

Realistic timeline. Give a bonding regimen four weeks before judging it. Bond care is cumulative, and a single application on badly damaged hair will underwhelm.
