The short answer

Salon smoothing works by loosening or re-forming the bonds that make hair swell and frizz, then sealing the cuticle flat with a hot iron. Keratin-family systems hold longest on coarse, humidity-reactive hair. Acid and amino-acid systems fade sooner but treat fine and color-treated hair far more gently.

Know the types

Keratin systems. The Brazilian-blowout family coats the strand with a protein solution and locks it in with a flat iron passed at roughly 400-450F. These give the biggest drop in blow-dry time and hold three to five months on thick hair. The strongest-hold versions in this group rely on a formaldehyde-releasing carrier, so a station with real extraction, an open door and a stylist in a respirator is not paranoia, it is what a competent salon does.

Glyoxylic and glyceric acid systems. The formaldehyde-free workaround. They bond to the strand through an acid reaction rather than an aldehyde cross-link, hold roughly eight to fourteen weeks, and produce no fumes. The trade-off is real: acid systems can push blonde tones warmer and leave very porous hair feeling slightly drier for the first week.

Cysteine and amino-acid systems. A mild reducing agent relaxes the disulfide structure and the iron sets it. Gentlest of the chemical options and the sensible pick for fine hair that goes limp under a keratin coating. Expect six to ten weeks and a faint sulfur smell during the service.

Thio-based thermal reconditioning. Japanese straightening is a different animal. It breaks disulfide bonds and rebuilds them permanently straight, so it does not fade, it grows out as a visible line. It is the only service here you cannot undo, and it is off the table on heavily bleached hair.

Tannin and plant-based smoothing. Vegetable tannins plus conditioning oils, sealed with heat. Closer to a heavy anti-frizz treatment than a chemical service, six to eight weeks of life, and the safest option on hair that is already compromised.

Bond-builder blowouts. Not smoothing at all, but often sold beside it. A bonding treatment plus a skilled blow-dry buys two to four weeks of manageability with zero chemistry.

Benefits

The measurable win is time. Most clients cut blow-dry time roughly in half, and many stop reaching for a flat iron daily, which matters more for long-term condition than the treatment chemistry itself. Humidity resistance is the second win: a properly done smoothing service keeps a style intact through a muggy afternoon that would otherwise cost you the whole look.

Be honest about the ceiling. Smoothing is not straightening. A tight curl becomes a loose wave, not a sheet. It will not close split ends, it will not rescue hair that snaps when stretched wet, and on hair with a long bleach history the strongest keratin formulas can over-soften a strand that was already fragile. If a stylist agrees to a full-strength service without stretching a wet test strand first, book elsewhere.

What it costs

Keratin and smoothing services carry a median of $300 across 31 salons in our price sample, with most quotes falling between $225 and $350. Length and density drive that spread more than brand does, since a mid-back, high-density head can consume double the product of a bob.

Maintenance runs on a separate line. A deep conditioning or bonding treatment has a median of $50 across 22 salons, with typical quotes from $32.50 to $65. Acid and amino-acid smoothing usually bills off the same smoothing menu line as keratin, so ask which chemistry the salon actually uses before you accept the quote. The price alone tells you nothing about what is going on your hair.

Aftercare

The first 72 hours decide the result on keratin and tannin systems. No washing, no ponytail, no clips, no tucking hair behind your ears, no headband. Anything that creases the hair while the bond is still setting can leave a permanent kink. Acid-based systems are usually wash-immediately, so confirm which rule applies to yours before you leave the chair.

After the waiting period, switch to a sulfate-free and sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Sulfates strip the treatment measurably faster, and most people who complain that their smoothing only lasted six weeks were washing with a clarifying formula. Wash every second or third day rather than daily, and finish with cool water.

Chlorine and salt water are the fastest way to strip a smoothing service. Wet your hair with clean water and coat it in conditioner before a pool, then rinse immediately after. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, use a heat protectant on the days you do style, and skip a color service for at least two weeks. Better still, have color done first and the smoothing second.

Plan the next appointment by fade, not by calendar. Keratin systems drift out gradually over three to five months, and when your blow-dry time creeps back up by roughly half, you are due. Ask for a clarifying wash before the retouch so the new solution can reach the strand.
