Salon Smoothing Treatments for Frizzy Hair: Types and Aftercare

The short answer

Salon smoothing loosens or breaks the bonds that make hair swell and curl when it meets humidity. Keratin and glyoxylic acid systems are the mainstream pick: they cut drying time and calm frizz for a season, then fade out. Thermal reconditioning and hydroxide relaxers are permanent, and mistakes with them are not recoverable.

Know the types

Keratin smoothing (formaldehyde-releasing). The classic Brazilian-style service. A protein solution is combed through, blow-dried, then sealed with flat iron passes around 425 to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat drives a formaldehyde-releasing agent to cross-link the coating onto the shaft. It gives the strongest frizz reduction per visit and the most reliable three-to-five-month hold. The trade-off is fume exposure during the sealing step, which is why serious salons run these in a ventilated station.

Glyoxylic acid smoothing (formaldehyde-free). Now the default in a lot of salons. Glyoxylic acid forms a temporary bond with the keratin in the hair and is set with heat, usually at a lower iron temperature than the traditional systems. Expect roughly two to four months rather than five, and a slightly softer result on very coarse hair. Many of these are same-day-wash formulas.

Cysteine and amino acid treatments. The gentlest option. Cysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid that reshapes bonds without a harsh releasing agent. It suits fine, color-damaged or previously bleached hair that cannot survive a stronger service. Hold is short, typically six to ten weeks, and the frizz reduction is partial rather than total. If someone wants glassy pin-straight hair, cysteine will disappoint them.

Japanese thermal reconditioning. A permanent restructuring service. A reducing agent breaks the disulfide bonds, the hair is ironed dead straight in small sections, then a neutraliser re-forms the bonds in the new shape. Appointments run five to eight hours. The straightened length never reverts, so every few months you are touching up new growth only, and the demarcation line between treated and untreated hair is a real breakage risk.

Hydroxide relaxers. Sodium, guanidine or lithium hydroxide permanently converts the bond structure. Fast and effective on tightly coiled hair, but the chemistry is unforgiving: overprocessing, overlapping onto previously relaxed hair, or scalp irritation can all cause damage that does not heal. A relaxer and a keratin service must never be layered without a long gap and a strand test.

Benefits

The real win is time. Most people cut their blow-dry from thirty minutes to ten, and the result holds through a humid day instead of collapsing by lunchtime. Smoothing also seals a raised cuticle, which is why hair looks shinier immediately even though nothing about the colour has changed. Coarse, high-density hair usually gets the largest visible change.

Be honest about the limits. No smoothing service repairs damage. If your frizz is really mid-shaft breakage and split ends, the treatment coats the problem for a few weeks and then you are back where you started with less hair. Smoothing also flattens volume at the root, which fine hair does not always want. And every system except cysteine will lighten a fresh colour slightly, so book colour first and smoothing second, or accept a shift of half a level.

What it costs

Keratin and smoothing services run a median of $300 across 31 salons in our pricing data, with most quotes falling between $225 and $350. The spread mostly tracks hair length and density, since both drive product usage and chair time.

Two adjacent numbers help with planning. In-salon deep conditioning and treatment services, the usual maintenance visit between smoothings, come in at a median of $50 across 22 salons. If you are colouring in the same appointment window, hair colour runs a median of $95 across 45 salons. Prices outside these bands are normal in high-cost metros and at senior stylist levels.

Aftercare

First 72 hours (traditional keratin only). No washing, no ponytails, no clips, no tucking hair behind your ears, no sunglasses pushed up on your head. Any crease set in this window can become semi-permanent. Same-day-wash and most glyoxylic formulas skip this restriction entirely, so confirm which system was used before you plan around it.

From the first wash on. Switch to a sulphate-free and sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Salt is the fastest way to strip a smoothing treatment, and it appears in a surprising number of drugstore formulas. Wash two or three times a week rather than daily.

Water and environment. Chlorine and salt water both shorten the result. Wet the hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming so the strands absorb less pool water. Rinse immediately after.

Heat. You need far less of it now, so use less. A blow-dry on medium with a nozzle is usually enough, and if you flat iron, stay near 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit with a heat protectant.

Timeline. Expect peak smoothness for the first six weeks, a gradual return of body and texture from weeks eight to twelve, and a genuine need to rebook somewhere between month three and month five. Because these treatments fade rather than grow out in a line, there is no awkward demarcation stage.
