Keratin Alternatives: Evaluating Matrix Smoothing Options

The short answer


Matrix approaches smoothing through Opti.Smooth in the salon and through bond-repair and moisture ranges at home. Treated as a keratin alternative it is a fair trade: less aggressive on the hair and the air in the salon, genuinely effective on frizz, but weaker on hard straightening and shorter-lived than a traditional keratin service.


Know the types


"Keratin alternative" is used loosely enough to cover four different things, and confusing them is why people are disappointed by results.


  • In-salon smoothing systems, including Matrix Opti.Smooth. A solution is applied, processed, blow-dried and sealed with a flat iron. The heat is what sets the new configuration. These systems are marketed as formaldehyde-free; because formulations change, ask the salon which specific version they stock and to show you the manufacturer safety sheet.
  • Amino acid and cysteine smoothing. Uses cysteine or hydrolysed proteins instead of a formaldehyde donor. Gentlest of the in-salon options, mildest on tight curl patterns, and the shortest-lasting.
  • Glyoxylic and glycolic acid smoothing. Longer-lasting than cysteine and closer to a classic keratin in feel, but genuinely acidic on the scalp, so a good stylist patch tests and keeps the product off the skin.
  • Bond builders, including Matrix Bond Ultim8. These are not smoothing treatments at all. They target broken bonds after lightening or chemical service. They reduce breakage and make hair feel stronger, which people read as smoother, but they do not change curl pattern. Buying one expecting straighter hair is the most common mistake in this category.
  • Deep conditioning masks marketed as hair botox. Purely cosmetic. They fill and coat the cuticle, look excellent for a few washes, and involve no restructuring. Fine as maintenance, useless as a substitute.
  • Japanese thermal reconditioning and hydroxide relaxers. Permanent, and the harshest chemistry in the room. They are the thing every alternative on this list is trying to avoid.

    • Matrix's home ranges support rather than replace those services: moisture-focused lines for dry and coarse hair, anti-breakage ranges for compromised hair, curl ranges for defined patterns, and toning shampoos for lightened hair.     Benefits and honest limits


    The case for formaldehyde-free smoothing is straightforward. Air quality in the salon is better for the stylist doing three of these a week and for you sitting under the iron. On wavy to loosely curly hair with a frizz problem rather than a volume problem, the result is often indistinguishable from a classic keratin: blow-dry time drops sharply, and humidity stops undoing the style.


    The limits are just as clear. On coarse, densely curled hair the smoothing effect is partial — you get a looser, more manageable curl rather than a straight result, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you the wrong service. Longevity is shorter, commonly around eight to twelve weeks against three to five months for a traditional treatment, and it fades gradually rather than growing out as a line. The service is also chemically incompatible with same-day heavy lightening, so plan colour and smoothing as two appointments. Bond builders will not smooth, masks will not last, and no treatment in this category repairs split ends.


    What it costs


    Keratin and smoothing services run a median of $300 across 31 salons, with most quotes between $225 and $350. Express or half-length versions price below a full service everywhere, and they last proportionally less time — usually a few weeks rather than a few months.


    Two things change the number materially: hair length and density, since the product is dosed by the head, and whether the salon includes the aftercare shampoo and conditioner in the service price. Ask which, because sulfate-free maintenance is not optional with any of these treatments and buying it separately closes most of the gap between quotes.

  • Follow the wash-delay window your stylist gives you, which is typically 48 to 72 hours for acid-based systems and shorter for cysteine ones. Do not tie the hair up, tuck it behind the ears or wear it under a headband during that window; the crease sets.
  • Move to a sulfate-free and sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Salt is the most common reason a smoothing treatment fades in six weeks instead of ten.
  • Stay out of chlorinated pools and salt water or wet and condition your hair first. Both strip the treatment faster than shampoo does.
  • Space colour and smoothing. Colour first, then smooth, or leave two weeks between them. Lightening on freshly smoothed hair is where breakage happens.
  • Keep using heat protectant. A smoothing treatment reduces how much heat you need, but it does not make the hair heat-proof.
  • Expect a gradual return of your natural texture from around week eight, starting at the crown and hairline. That is normal fading, not a failed treatment.

    Can I colour my hair and get a smoothing treatment on the same day?
    Deposit-only colour, often yes, applied before the smoothing service. Lightening, no — space it by at least two weeks and let your stylist sequence it, because the order matters more than the gap.
    Will smoothing work on tightly curled hair?
    Partially. It loosens the pattern and cuts frizz, but it will not straighten type 4 hair, and forcing that result with extra heat is how the pattern gets permanently damaged.
