Bond Additives for High-Lift Color: A Stylist's Guide

Which bond additive belongs in the bowl during a high-lift service, which one belongs at the backbar, and how each chemistry changes your lift and your timing.

The short answer


A bond additive protects the disulfide structure of the hair while high-lift lightener is breaking it. For in-bowl use during a high-lift service, the two chemistries worth stocking are bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate (Olaplex No.1) and the maleic acid family (WellaPlex, Smartbond, B3, Fibreplex). Peptide repair belongs after the rinse.


Know the types


Stylists tend to lump every "plex" product together, but they do not do the same job, and two of these categories never belong in the lightener at all.


Dimaleate crosslinkers. Olaplex No.1 built the category around bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate. It reacts with the free thiol groups that persulfate salts leave behind mid-lift and links them back into a bridge before they oxidise into cysteic acid. It is the most forgiving option when you are pulling four or more levels in a single session, and it is the one that behaves most predictably in a high-ratio clay or off-scalp lightener.


Maleic acid systems. WellaPlex No.1, L'Oreal Professionnel Smartbond, Brazilian Bond Builder B3, Schwarzkopf Fibreplex and Goldwell Bondpro+ all sit in this group. Maleic and malic acid chemistry costs less per service and drops the mix pH slightly, which is useful on fine or previously coloured hair where you want a gentler swell. The trade-off is a marginally softer result on very compromised mid-lengths, and a mix that can thicken faster than you expect.


Peptide and acidic backbar repair. K18's oligopeptide and Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate are post-rinse products. K18 in particular needs to go on towel-dried hair with no conditioner or mask underneath it, and it wants four minutes of dwell without rinsing. Putting either into the bowl wastes product.


Porosity equalisers and protein fillers. These smooth an uneven cuticle before a toner so the gloss deposits evenly. They are not bond builders and should not be counted as protection.


One practical caveat applies to every in-bowl additive: it dilutes the lightener and buffers the pH a little. Plan on roughly half a level less lift, or five to ten extra minutes of processing, and adjust your formula before you start rather than mid-service.


Benefits


The measurable benefit is elasticity retention. Hair treated with an in-bowl additive during an aggressive lift will stretch and recoil rather than stretch and snap, which is the difference between a client who can wear the result and a client who needs a corrective cut. On previously coloured mid-lengths, the additive is what usually saves the demarcation zone where old colour meets virgin hair.


The second benefit is service time. Because the fibre tolerates the process better, you can carry a full application through to the target level instead of rinsing early and booking a second session two weeks out.


Be honest about the limits. A bond additive will not rescue hair that already stretches without recoil at the porosity test, will not repair cuticle damage from flat irons, and does not license a stronger developer than the hair can handle. It also does not replace a strand test. If the test strand turns to gum, no additive in the bowl changes that outcome.


What it costs


Bond additives are almost always folded into the price of the colour service rather than billed separately, so what a client actually pays is the colour ticket. Across the salons in our pricing sample, a full hair colour service runs a median of $95 across 45 salons, with most falling between $60 and $140. A root touch-up or single-process colour sits at a median of $100 across 30 salons, typically $75 to $150. A high-lift service with a bond additive lands at the upper end of those bands because of the extra product and chair time it demands.


Aftercare


Send the client home with a specific timeline, not a vague instruction to be gentle.


  • First 48 to 72 hours: no shampoo. The cuticle is still settling and the toner is still fading into place.
  • Weeks one to three: a weekly at-home bond maintenance treatment on mid-lengths and ends. This is the part clients skip, and it is the part that keeps the result intact through the first regrowth cycle.
  • Shampoo choice: sulphate-free daily wash. No clarifying or chelating shampoo for at least two weeks; both strip the toner and undo the acidic close.
  • Heat: blow-dryer on medium, irons capped around 350F, and a heat protectant every single time. High-lift hair scorches at temperatures that virgin hair shrugs off.
  • Toning: a violet or blue shampoo once or twice a week, no longer than the label says. Overuse leaves a grey cast on lifted level 9 and 10 hair.
  • Rebooking: gloss refresh at four to six weeks, next lift no sooner than eight to ten weeks, and always behind a fresh strand test.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I add a bond additive to any lightener?
    Almost always yes, but stay inside one brand family when you can. Additives are tested against their own lightener and developer, and cross-mixing a maleic system into a high-ratio clay lightener can thicken the mix enough to change the application. Test a small batch first.
    Does a bond additive slow down the lift?
    Slightly. Expect about half a level less lift or five to ten additional minutes, because you are diluting the lightener and nudging the pH down. Build that into the formula at the start rather than compensating with a higher developer volume partway through.
    Should I use Olaplex or K18 during a high-lift service?
    Use the dimaleate additive in the bowl and the peptide after the rinse. They solve different problems: one protects bonds while they are being broken, the other works on damaged fibre once the lightener is off.
    How long should a client wait before lightening again?
    Eight to ten weeks between full lift sessions, and only after a strand test shows recoil. Root-only retouches on healthy regrowth can come sooner, but never overlap the previously lightened section.
    Does an additive replace a strand test?
    No. The strand test tells you whether the hair survives the process at all; the additive only improves the odds. Skipping it because a bond builder is in the bowl is how stylists end up with unexpected breakage.
