How they actually differ


Hair damage is not one thing, which is why one product cannot be best at all of it. A keratin fibre is held together by several bond types: disulfide bonds between cysteine residues, which give hair its strength and are what perms and relaxers deliberately break; hydrogen and salt bonds, which are broken by water and reformed by drying; and the peptide backbone of the keratin chain itself, which bleach can fragment outright.


Olaplex's chemistry was built around the disulfide problem. Its active is designed to find single sulphur atoms left stranded when a disulfide bond is broken during lightening and link them back into a bridge. That is why its most convincing use is mixed into lightener during the service, when the bonds are actively breaking. Used afterwards it still helps, but it is working on damage that has already had time to progress.


K18's peptide is aimed at a different failure: the broken polypeptide chain. It is small enough to travel into the cortex and is designed to reconnect chain fragments, which is why the instructions are unusually strict — clean, towel-dried hair, nothing layered on top, four minutes to let it migrate in. Those rules are not marketing. Conditioner applied over it physically blocks the peptide, and this is the single most common reason people report no result.


Acidic bonding systems, of which Redken's Acidic Bonding Concentrate is the best-known example, are solving a third problem. Hair sits naturally around pH 4.5 to 5.5; colour and lightening push it alkaline, which swells the fibre and lifts the cuticle. Dropping the pH contracts the cuticle again, which improves shine, reduces frizz and slows colour fade dramatically. It is the least dramatic intervention structurally and often the most visible one cosmetically.


None of them rebuild hair to virgin condition, and none of them repair a split end — once the fibre has divided, cutting is the only answer. Claims beyond that should be read sceptically regardless of which company makes them.


What each one costs


Retail pricing for all three moves with format, size and retailer, and professional in-salon versions are priced separately again, so no figure appears here. Compare on cost per use rather than bottle price: a four-minute leave-in used once a week for compromised hair is a very different running cost from a full shampoo, conditioner and treatment regimen used at every wash.


Ask your stylist which system is used in the salon before buying at home. Buying the retail counterpart of the line already being used in-service is usually better value than mixing three brands, because the aftercare is designed around the in-salon step.


Who should choose which


Choose K18 if you have just been through a heavy lightening session, a relaxer, or a run of high-heat styling, and the hair feels gummy, over-elastic or unable to hold a curl. That combination points to chain-level damage, which is what it is built for. Follow the instructions literally — the shortcut version of this treatment simply does not work.


Choose Olaplex if you lighten regularly and want protection during the service rather than repair after it; that is where its chemistry is strongest and where the evidence is most consistent. Choose an acidic bonding system if your hair is not really broken but looks tired: colour fading fast, frizz in humidity, no shine. If you are on a tight budget and can only maintain one thing, the acidic system is the one that changes daily appearance most for the least effort. If your hair is fine and already feels stiff, stop adding protein and use a moisture mask instead — protein overload looks identical to damage and is caused by the fix.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use K18 and Olaplex together?
Yes, but not in the same step. They work on different bonds and neither blocks the other. The usual sequence is a bond builder during or immediately after the chemical service, then K18 on clean, towel-dried hair as a separate leave-in step. Layering conditioner over K18 before its four minutes are up dilutes it.
Do bond builders actually repair hair or just coat it?
Both categories do more than coat. Peptide and maleate chemistries form covalent connections inside the fibre, which is measurably different from silicone smoothing. What none of them do is restore virgin hair — repair is partial, and split ends still need cutting because a split cannot be rejoined.
Is a professional in-salon treatment better than the retail version?
Usually stronger, not different in kind. In-salon versions run at higher active concentration and are often applied inside the chemical service where the hair is most receptive. The retail versions are what maintain the result between appointments, and skipping them undoes a lot of the salon work.
How often should I use a bond repair treatment?
Every chemical service without exception, then roughly weekly at home while hair is compromised, tapering as it recovers. Continuous heavy use on healthy hair can leave it feeling stiff or straw-like, particularly on fine textures — that is protein overload, and the fix is a moisture-focused mask, not more protein.
