Hair Gloss Treatments: Shine, Tone and Upkeep

The short answer

A hair gloss is a demi-permanent colour service that deposits tone and smooths the cuticle without lifting your natural pigment. It makes hair look shinier and more even, neutralises brass on blondes and refreshes faded colour — and it fades gradually rather than leaving a regrowth line. It cannot lighten hair, and it will not repair damage.

Know the types

Clear gloss. No pigment, all shine. It seals the cuticle and adds reflectivity without changing your colour at all. This is the right choice if you like your shade and just want hair that catches light — and the right choice if you are nervous about tone shifting.

Tinted demi-permanent gloss. Pigment plus shine. Used to neutralise unwanted warmth in blonde and lightened hair, to deepen a faded brunette, or to blend the first grey. Redken's Shades EQ Gloss, one of the most widely used salon systems, is described by the brand as an ammonia-free acidic demi-permanent colour, mixed one to one with its processing solution and processed for 20 minutes at room temperature — up to 40 minutes on grey.

Acidic versus alkaline demi. Acidic formulas sit closer to hair's own pH, so they deposit tone with minimal swelling of the cuticle. That is why they are described as gentle and why they behave more like a shine treatment than a colour service. Alkaline demis open the cuticle slightly more, giving stronger grey coverage but a marginally harsher effect on already-porous hair.

Glaze and at-home versions. Retail glosses and glazes generally deposit less pigment and wash out faster. They are a reasonable maintenance bridge between salon visits, not a substitute for one, and the tone you get depends heavily on how porous your hair already is.

Benefits and honest limits

What a gloss genuinely does is optical. Light reflects evenly off a smooth cuticle and scatters off a rough one, so laying down pigment and closing the surface makes hair read as glossier immediately, before any conditioning ingredient does anything. It also evens out porosity, which is why faded mid-lengths and ends stop looking dull and patchy in the same appointment.

Duration is finite by design. Redken states its Shades EQ Gloss lasts up to 28 shampoos — so on a hair-washing schedule of three times a week, that is roughly two months of tone, with the visible shine tailing off earlier. If a salon promises a gloss will hold for six months, the promise is wrong.

The limits are worth being direct about. A gloss deposits; it does not lift. If you want to be lighter, you need lightening first and the gloss afterward as the toning step. It also will not rebuild damaged bonds — glossy damaged hair is still damaged hair. And it is still a colour service: the American Academy of Dermatology advises staying within three shades of your natural colour, notes that going lighter than that requires higher volumes of peroxide and causes more damage, and lists rash, redness, swelling, burning or itching as signs of an allergic reaction to dye that warrant stopping and seeing a dermatologist.

What it costs

This directory does not carry a verified national price sample for gloss services specifically, so any single figure you see quoted for a gloss should be treated as one salon's rate rather than a benchmark. Pricing swings on hair length, whether the gloss is standalone or added to a colour service, and whether it is clear or custom-mixed.

For scale, two adjacent services do have samples in the network's data: deep conditioning and treatment services run a median of $50 across 22 salons, and full hair colour runs a median of $95 across 45 salons. A standalone gloss usually sits between those two categories in effort and chair time — but neither number is a gloss price, and neither should be quoted back to a salon as one.

Aftercare

Wait to wash. Give the colour 24 to 48 hours before the first shampoo. Demi-permanent pigment continues settling into the cuticle after you leave, and an immediate wash costs you tone.

Wash less, and cooler. Since a gloss is measured in shampoos rather than weeks, every wash you skip is duration you keep. Hot water swells the cuticle and speeds the fade; lukewarm rinses and a cool final rinse hold shine longer.

Use a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo. Harsh surfactants strip deposited pigment faster than anything else in your routine. Follow with conditioner every wash — the AAD's basic colouring guidance includes conditioning after each shampoo for chemically treated hair.

Protect from sun and heat. The AAD notes sun can leave hair weak, dry, rough, faded and brittle, and recommends a wide-brimmed hat outdoors — advice that matters more once you have paid for tone. Use a heat protectant before flat irons and blow dryers.

Do not stack chemical services. The AAD advises having only one service at a time, and if you want more than one, to perm or relax first and colour two weeks later. Book the gloss on its own day.

Rebook by shampoos, not by the calendar. Count your washes. Someone washing daily will need a refresh at roughly the four-week mark; someone washing twice a week can stretch past two months on the same service.
